A tortoise ran away from home

When a gate to a home's yard in Rio Rancho, New Mexico was left open, an 80-pound pet tortoise decided to make a break for it. As KOAT News reports, the tortoise, named Spike, made it a half-mile away from his home before he was discovered and returned to his owners by Animal Control.

Spike’s owner, Audrey, told the station that her 17-year-old tortoise was a Valentine’s Day gift from her husband and that when she got home to find him missing, she was devastated. She told KOAT, “He freaked me out when he did run away, so it kind of scared me…so I put up signs right away.” Fortunately the big guy didn’t get too far. It was only two hours later that he was picked up by Animal Control. Audrey got her pet back the following day.
