47-year-old woman gives birth to naturally conceived triplets, doctor calls it a ‘miracle’
Sharon Lewis received an early Mother’s Day gift this week, getting to take her triplet boys, born on March 18, home to join the rest of their family.
As reported by WSVN 7, news that she was pregnant with the triplets, conceived without the aid of hormone or fertility treatments, came as a major shock to Lewis who thought that at age 47 it was impossible for her to get pregnant. The mom recounted her conversation with a technician that happened a few months after finding out that she was pregnant. "She said twins at first. She said, ‘Twin A, twin B, and look like I see something else but I'm not for sure. Let me get my boss and bring her in.’ So she brought her in and she told her, she said ‘Yes it looks like another sac over there.’ Now the tears rolled because it was unexpected," said Lewis.
WPLG Local 10 reports that Lewis’ OBGYN at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, Dr. Salih Y. Yasin, said that the odds of a pregnancy like hers were one in hundreds of thousands. Already a mother of two, Ms. Lewis gave birth to the triplets Dylan, Denard and Denere at 30 weeks through Cesarian section. While she developed preeclampsia during pregnancy, doctors said that Lewis took great care of herself, and mom and the three boys are doing well. Dr. Yasin said, “It was a miracle that she got pregnant. A miracle that she got three. And the miracle is all of them are healthy and normal and she is fine."
Since their second day of life, the triplets, two of which are identical, were breathing on their own and were strong and healthy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Miami’s Holtz Children Hospital. The four-pound newborns were headed home after the press conference to join their 25-year-old sister and 14-year-old brother. "Everybody is so excited, you know so excited, and so supportive," Lewis said. "I'm glad to be taking my boys home on Mother's Day weekend."
Caring for her three newborns will undoubtedly be tough. However, Lewis has faith that everything will be fine saying, "I felt that it was nobody but God that had blessed my womb at 47 and I do believe that he brought me to it. He’ll bring me through it."
