Montreal adds size, signs Daniel Briere for two years, $8 million

Shortly after missing out on Vincent Lecavalier, who signed with the Flyers after his buyout from Tampa Bay, the Montreal Canadiens turned their attention to another recent buyout, Daniel Briere.

In this, they were ultimately successful. Briere has agreed to a deal with the Canadiens that will pay him $8 million over the next two years -- a $4 million cap hit.

The deal reportedly comes with a no-movement clause as well.

On one hand, Lecavalier would have been a better fit. But on the other hand, this signing checks off all of Montreal's boxes. French-Canadian and tiny? Sign that dude!

Briere gives the Canadiens forward corps someone to look up to, and I mean that literally. Comparatively, he's tall. Montreal boasts 5'9" Brendan Gallagher, as well as David Desharnias and Brian Gionta, both of whom are 5'7".

Briere is 5'10". The Canadiens just added size.

The question now is whether the 35-year-old Briere can refind his game back in his home province. Without a doubt, he was no longer worth the $6.5 million cap hit he carried on the Flyers. Briere's even-strength points-per-game has dropped from 0.69 to 0.29 in three seasons. In 2013, he had just 6 goals and 16 points for the Flyers.

Perhaps that was just an off-year. If not, even $4 million might be too much for him now.
