Coaches Heat Index – Houston’s Gary Kubiak falling flat on his face this season

Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak was asked if he had any concerns about his job status this past Monday. He gave the right answer.

“I’m not worried about me,” Kubiak told UltimateTexans.com. “I’d be very selfish if I was worried about (job situation). I’ve got to figure out how we correct these mistakes.”
The fact that this is a topic of conversation should concern Kubiak.

However, since starting this season 2-0, Houston has lost its past four games. The Texans have been outscored 72-16 in their last two losses (San Francisco and St. Louis). Houston’s defense has allowed 30-or-more points three times this season. Oh, and we have not even mentioned quarterback Matt Schaub yet.

Houston was built to contend for a Super Bowl title, but considering how strong the AFC is this season, the Texans may not make the playoffs. Texans players defended their coach after their recent loss against St. Louis, but Kubiak’s coaching record is 61-57, and he is 2-2 in the playoffs. He may have taken this team as far as they can go, and it appears a change might be necessary.

Greg Schiano, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
You cannot blame Schiano for the MRSA issues at One Buc Place, but he definitely is responsible for Tampa Bay’s 0-5 start. Tampa Bay has been outscored 101-64, and Schiano cannot win with eight Pro Bowlers on the roster, plus a huge payroll. Tampa Bay needs to call Lovie Smith immediately.

Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers
Carolina dominated in its recent victory against the Minnesota Vikings, which gives Rivera two wins this season. The Panthers need to get on a hot streak for Rivera to stay employed.

Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons
Falcons receiver Roddy White recently said his team did not have an identity, and added, “we suck in the red zone right now.” White said Smith is not losing the team, but at 1-4, he is seemingly inching closer to losing his job.

GETTING WARMER
Mike Shanahan, Washington Redskins
He can complain about the officials, but Washington’s defense is ranked 27th in the league. It does not appear Robert Griffin III will be able to carry this team like he did in 2012, and prior to Washington’s playoff appearance last season, Shanahan’s previous winning season occurred with the Denver Broncos in 2006.

GETTING COLDER
Tom Coughlin, New York Giants
Ownership is seemingly ready to give Coughlin another season, but if New York continues to play poorly, they might be forced to revisit their decision.
