200 Nuela Diners Surprised with Free Airline Tickets

Amanda Kludt, Eater NY

Last night was a good night to be at pan-South American restaurant Nuela. As a way to promote their South American routes, airline carrier LAN put on a stunt taken right out of the Oprah Winfrey playbook: they gave away round trip tickets to any LAN destination in South America to every single diner in the restaurant.

Guests at Nuela last night (some of whom were told there would be some kind of special announcement) were greeted with a camera crew and disclaimer signage announcing filming, the first sign something was up. And at around 8 PM, stewardesses in full regalia visited three tables, surprising one diner at each with tickets. It seemed to many that that was the surprise: three lucky winners.

That's when a representative from LAN got on a microphone to reveal that those three winners got tickets...and so did everyone else in the restaurant. They were taped under every table.

And that's when all hell broke loose.

The giveaway, to about 200 diners, is part of the airline's "Only in South America" campaign to promote travel in the region. Reps say they are considering doing similar stunts in other American cities, perhaps starting with San Francisco.
