Woman's attorney: 'We expect' Winston to be called as witness in disciplinary hearing
Heisman Trophy-winner Jameis Winston could be called as a witness to the Florida State disciplinary hearing of teammates Chris Casher and Ronald Darby.
Casher and Darby are charged with violating the Florida State code of conduct surrounding the incident between Winston and a former Florida State student who accused him of sexual assault. Winston was ultimately not charged by a Florida state prosecutor due to a lack of evidence in the case.
Both Casher and Darby said in statements that they watched Winston and the accuser have sex and that they believed it was consensual while Casher had videotaped part of it on his phone.
The hearing is set for Tuesday.
“We’ve been told by the university that he’s going to be called as a witness,” John Clune, the attorney representing the woman told Fox Sports. “We expect him to be called.”
Florida State didn't comment to Fox Sports, citing privacy laws. Winston has also maintained that the sexual encounter was consensual.
In January, the university reportedly went through its own investigation into the happenings on the night of Dec. 7, 2012 and charged Casher and Darby with five violations of the code of conduct, including "conduct of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for another person" and "acts that invade the privacy of another person."
Punishments could extend from a letter of reprimand to expulsion.
In March, the woman filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, saying that the school violated Title IX laws in its investigation after Winston was not interviewed until January and the woman wasn't interviewed at all.
Winston was suspended from the Florida State baseball team in late April after he took crab legs and crawfish from a Tallahassee, Fla. Publix on April 28 without paying. He received a civil citation for the incident and after completing community service and repaying the $32.72 worth of food that he walked out of the store with, he was reinstated to the baseball team.
