Auburn cancer survivor Shon Coleman to announce pick at NFL draft

Auburn offensive lineman Shon Coleman will make the trip to New York City for the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday where he will get to announce a first-round pick, according to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Coleman, a sophomore left tackle, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, just a few weeks after the five-star recruit signed his letter of intent with the Tigers. After undergoing treatment, the cancer went into remission in April 2010, but it took time for Coleman to get back on his feet.

After re-enrolling in undergraduate courses, he made his way back to the practice field in April 2012 and finally made his debut on the field in mop-up duty against Arkansas State last September.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Coleman, who just graduated with a degree in public administration, has three years of eligibility remaining and is competing with junior Patrick Miller to take over the starting role from projected first-rounder Greg Robinson at left tackle for Gus Malzahn’s Tigers.

The 22-year-old will begin graduate courses next semester.
