David Ortiz 1-on-1: How grand slam changed Sox outlook

David Ortiz was the hero Sunday night when he blasted an eighth-inning grand slam into the Red Sox bullpen to tie the game at 5-5. The Sox would go on to win, 6-5, in the bottom of the ninth. He joined CSNNE's Jessica Moran on Monday to discuss the game, and the hit. What was going through his mind going into that at-bat?

"Nothing. We've been struggling offensively and facing some really good pitching," Ortiz said. "To be honest with you my mentality was try to put a good swing on the ball and make something happen. We were so down for a whole bunch of innings, so I just wanted to make something happen."

Ortiz's slam was just out of the reach of good friend and former teammate Torii Hunter, who then flipped over the Fenway Park wall in right field in an attempt to make the play.

"Torii is one of the best outfielders I've ever seen," Ortiz said. "We came up together in the minor leagues with the Twins. I know what my man is capable of. I saw him chasing the ball last night, and to be honest with you I thought he had some chance [to catch it]."

Coming up with big hits in big situations is nothing new for Ortiz, but he says it's not something he focuses on at any point.

"I never think about it, I just get caught in the moment and try to get it done. I go through the motions. I try not to put pressure on myself or anything. I just try to look at it like any other at-bat."
