LeBron James apparently has a '24/7 DJ' in his hotel room in China, playing music nonstop
After a brief stay in the Philippines to get dunked over and miss a couple of late-game shots, LeBron James' Nike-sponsored summer siesta took him to China for a four-day tour of the massive nation that loves basketball enough to erect statues of Stephon Marbury and Kobe Bryant. The Miami Heat star's first stop? Guangzhou, the largest city in Guangdong province, where massive crowds turned out to catch a glimpse of the two-time NBA champion and four-time Most Valuable Player.
The whirlwind touring, the jet-setting schedule and the adoring crowds all do a pretty good job of underlining just how big a star James is overseas. But in case it's not sufficiently sinking in, maybe the fact that James has a DJ just posted up in his room at the W Hotel in Guangzhou, apparently tasked with spinning records nonstop throughout the duration of LeBron's stay. Kind of screams "star treatment," doesn't it?
LeBron introduced us to his personal soundtrack just after midnight on Thursday morning ET, meaning it just a few minutes after noon on Thursday:
He came back nearly nine hours later to show us that "DJ Bear" was still going strong:
Three things about this:
1. LeBron presumably has a pretty tight schedule while he's on a promotional tour — appearances, meet-and-greets, etc. — that would take him out of the confines of his hotel room. Do we think DJ Bear gets to take a break when James is out on assignment, or does he have to keep the party going so that LeBron comes back to a chill time already in progress (sort of like when you leave the air conditioner on when you go out on a hot day so that it's nice and cool when you come home)?
2. If you had a personal DJ whose sole task it was to play music that made you happy all the time, would you try to trip said DJ up occasionally ("The only thing in the world I want to hear right now is the test pressing of 'Pencil Neck Geek' by famed wrestling manager Classy Freddie Blassie") or would you acknowledge that this is kind of a weird situation and just stick with what the dude's probably got on hand ("No, yeah, definitely, let's run back 'Holy Grail' again")?
3. Do you think the DJ has a full selection of white-noise-machine-style sounds to be able to play when LeBron's getting ready to go to sleep? If not, what do you think he goes with? Some Sam Cooke? Man, I hope it's some Sam Cooke.
Here's how you know this is crazy: With the level of celebrity, fame and notoriety that LeBron James has accrued during his professional NBA career, he sees, does and experiences stuff that we mere plebes can't and don't all the time ... and even he felt like it was pretty weird and worth noting. Thanks for the head's up, LeBron. Ask dude to throw on some Cap'n Jazz for me, huh?
