World Series odds: Tigers still the favorite, while the surging Pirates aren’t getting the love

Now that August is here and the postseason is within sight, the odds that gambling experts churn out about who is most likely to win the World Series seem a bit more real.

The latest odds from online casino Bovada don't show much shift at the top: The Detroit Tigers are still the odds on favorite (6/1) with the Atlanta Braves (7/1), St. Louis Cardinals (15/2) and Boston Red Sox (8/1) all in the top five, like they were on July 1.

The only change in the top five is the Dodgers, whose red-hot July moved them to 7/1 odds, now being invited to the party. They were 22/1 on July 1.

A few other things:

• The Pirates, owners of the best winning percentage in baseball, just aren't getting the love from the experts. They're still 12/1, which is exactly what they were on July 1. Both the Oakland Athletics (9/1) and Tampa Bay Rays (17/2) are more fondly favored than the Pirates. This is why "Are the Pirates for real?" continues to be a question people ask.

• The Reds, who are in third place in the NL Central but still one of the most dangerous teams in baseball, are holding steady at 14/1. Seems like there's some value there.

• On the bottom of the list: The Marlins went from 3000/1 odds last month to 5000/1 now. The Astros are also 5000/1, after being 2500/1 last month. Go throw your money away!
