Marty Brennaman caught flipping bird at Rockies broadcasters
The Cincinnati Reds did not have a fun night at the ballpark on Saturday night. They were positively drubbed by the Colorado Rockies, who muscled up for five home runs and cruised to an 11-2 victory. When things are going that bad on the field, one can only imagine how miserable things might be in the stands, or even in the broadcast booth, where it's the announcers job to make the mess in front of them entertaining, or at least interesting, to the viewing or listening audience.
The Reds are lucky in that they have a Hall of Famer in Marty Brennaman to fulfill that role. If anyone can make a blowout "listenable", it's Brennaman. Just make sure you don't get those televsion cameras too close, because his body language may tell a different story that's not suitable for televsion.
Marty Brennaman has never been one to keep his opinions to himself anyway. Whether he's calling out Cubs fans, or simply doubting the Reds abilities, he's never shy. If he can't do it verbally while he's on the air or in a public setting, he'll just bust out a little "Stone Cold" Steve Austin sign language, and the message comes across loud and clear.
As for the backstory on why the bird was flipped. Again, the Reds were getting clobbered from the get-go after Colorado's Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson led off the game with back-to-back home runs. In the sixth inning, a foul ball came straight back toward the Reds radio booth, and Brennaman basically no sold it. He didn't even flinch or make an effort, which led to some playful ribbing from the Rockies televison crew of Drew Goodman and George Frazier. In response, Brennaman gave the one-finger salute, which came just as the camera panned to him.
His timing: Impeccable.
His message: Unrepeatable.
The visual: Priceless.
