Jon Lester says three-year-old son tweeted Temple Run score during Friday night’s game

Social media can be your best friend or your worst enemy. For Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester, it was the latter on Friday night.

On the field, Lester was hammered for 11 hits and eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Arizona Diamondbacks. That alone was enough to frustrate Red Sox Nation. However, a tweet that followed Lester’s exit raised their ire a little more. It appeared, at least from the tweet, that Lester was more focused on a playing Temple Run on his phone either between innings or immediately afterwards in the clubhouse.

Just as quickly as the tweet showed up, it disappeared. But it was captured and shared by a number of Red Sox fans through sarcastic and witty retweets.

With this much attention focused on the tweet by the time the game ended, an explanation was necessary. And Lester was prepared with one.

This actually seems plausible, but suspicion remains because of the fact that someone went through the trouble of deleting the tweet. I think we could safely assume his son wasn't responsible for that, but perhaps his wife or someone else quickly noticed what had happened and pulled it down on his behalf.

Perhaps a league wide investigation is warranted here. Or maybe not.

Honestly, to me, it wouldn't be that big a deal if Lester decided to relax in the clubhouse and play a couple games after hitting the showers. But by the same token, I do understand how it could rub fans and even teammates the wrong way. If he wasn't out there supporting his team late in a one run game — especially when the offense got him off the hook — it certainly could be seen as selfish. But since we'll never know for sure, I think all we can do now is take him at his word and assume that regardless of who's in possession of his phone during his next outing, playing Temple Run will not be an option.
