Cleveland Indians fans were happy and vocal early in their 4-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Wednesday's AL wild card game. Unfortunately, by the end, their mood had changed completely. In fact, one fan was frustrated enough to throw a partially filled cup at Rays left fielder David DeJesus as he attempted to make a catch.
It happened in the eighth inning with Tampa Bay commanding the game 3-0. Michael Brantley skied a pop foul down the left-field line, drifting dangerously close to Steve Bartman territory. No physical interference this time. That's a plus. But one misguided miscreant tried to create a distraction by throwing what appeared to be some type of beverage at DeJesus. Some even believe it could have been a makeshift spittoon full of chew.
Regardless of the contents, it would have made for a disgusting mess had the fan's intentions come to pass.Thankfully for the Rays, it didn't play out that way. The throw was late, allowing DeJesus to make the catch cleanly. It was also inaccurate, allowing DeJesus' jersey to stay clean.
The attempt basically accomplished nothing, and we hope Progressive Field security turned it into a complete loss by tossing the tosser out of the stadium.
Though we don't condone or encourage violence in the stands, Paul Sullivan's suggestion on Twitter wasn't too bad either.
Hope @KimDeJesus9 goes down to LF and pummels the idiot who threw beer at her husband. And tweets it of course.

Of course the incident was long forgotten by the Rays when the game was over. They got their win, allowing them to advance to the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox. And they had their silly string, too. How could life get any better?
