David Ortiz finished third in Boston’s recent mayoral election
With that World Series win still racing through their minds, Bostonians went to the polls Tuesday to elect a new mayor. No, they didn't elect a New York Yankees fan. At least not that we know of.
But Red Sox fans did give their favorite slugger, David Ortiz, one more honor this fall, to go with the World Series MVP Award, the Silver Slugger and Sports Illustrated cover. He finished third in the mayoral vote. As a write-in candidate.
It's unclear just how many votes Big Papi received, but WGBH confirms that Ortiz was the top write-in vote-getter. Election data shows that 560 write-in votes were cast, behind Mayor-elect Martin Walsh's 72,514 votes and challenger John Connolly's 67,606 votes.
Both were hoping to take over for Thomas Menino, who spent 10 years as Boston's mayor, but declined to seek a sixth term. Ortiz recently talked to NESN about his relationship with Menino. They were pals.
"That’s my man, you know. Me and Menino, we go way back and we always do a lot of things together,” Ortiz said earlier this week. “Knowing he was going to retire, it was a shock. We’ve had Mayor Menino over, what, 20 years? He’s done an incredible job through the years. I wasn’t ready to see him retire, but it happens to all of us.
"I was proud to get to know him through the years, doing things with him, especially for kids. I love kids. He encouraged me to do things like that,” Ortiz added. “The political side — I don’t know about that and I stay away from that. He just told me, ‘Go get ’em, tiger.’”
We don't know an awful lot about the Mayor Walsh and what kind of relationship he'll have with Ortiz. But we'll hope if given the chance he gives Papi and the 2014 Red Sox a better pep talk than "Go get 'em, tiger."
