College player who was struck by a skydiver diagnosed with a concussion, out for the season
The college baseball player who was struck by a skydiver during a pregame ceremony on Saturday didn't just achieve viral Internet fame (though, the video of this mishap does have more than a million hits now). He also suffered a concussion that will end his season of summer ball.
Mattingly Romanin — let's all just pause and think about how great that name is — is the infielder for the Hannibal Cavemen — another great name — who was hit during a skydiving stunt gone awry.
At the time, it didn't seem like he was hurt too bad. But after seeing a doctor on Monday, Romanin was diagnosed with a concussion. Since he suffered another in the spring while playing for Chicago State University, Romanin's coaches shut him down for the 18 remaining games this summer.
All things considered, Romanin seems to be taking the whole ordeal quite well. From the Quincy Herald-Whig (yet another great name):
"I still have headaches and stuff like that, and I just feel a little slow," Romanin said during a phone interview Tuesday. "It is unfortunate that it ended my season, and I'm a little upset about that, but you know what, it's just a freak accident and there's nothing we can do now. So I'm still trying to be upbeat it, and I'm still laughing with everybody."
It's good that he's laughing about it — other ballplayers might be fuming that they got hurt in such a ridiculous way, especially with a head injury. Heck, some people would probably be discussing lawsuits.
Mattingly Romanin might go down as the guy who got hurt because of a skydiver, but he certainly doesn't belong in baseball's Silly Injury Hall of Fame for this. Only the Cool Baseball Name Hall of Fame.
