Yoko Ono launches campaign against gun violence using John Lennon’s blood-stained glasses

Yoko Ono took to Twitter on Wednesday to call for an end to gun violence. And she used a haunting image to get her message across: John Lennon's blood-stained glasses.

"The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience," Ono tweeted to some 3.6 million followers. "After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him."

The photo was also attached to a series of similar tweets.

In the picture, the glasses are shown sitting on a ledge inside their apartment at the Dakota, where the former Beatle was murdered by Mark David Chapman, a crazed fan, in 1980. The text on the photo reads: "Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980."

Ono still lives in the apartment. Chapman was convicted of the killing in 1981 and remains in prison.

The original image was also used as the front cover of Ono's 1981 solo album, "Season of Glass." (A print of the original photo, one of six in existence, was auctioned off for charity in 2002.)

Earlier this week, Ono posted a message to filmmaker Michael Moore on Twitter asking him to help her "kick off a mass movement against gun violence from your living room."

"31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year," another tweet from Ono read. "We are turning this beautiful country into a war zone."

Earlier this month, the 80-year-old activist enlisted a handful of celebrities to appear in a music video, "Don't Frack My Mother," to protest fracking, the controversial method of extracting underground natural gas.
