Together they won a bronze medal. Now Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion have a chance to reach the diving podium individually.

The pair have advanced to Thursday's semifinal of the women's 10-metre individual platform event at the London Olympic Games.

Benfeito, of  Montreal, finished 10th in Wednesday's preliminary qualifying with a five-dive total of 325.50 points. Filion, of Laval, Que., squeezed by with a 17th-place finish on 314.85 points.

China's Chen Roulin, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, led the qualifying with 392.35 points.

Benfeito and Filion won the bronze medal in the women's 10-metre synchronized event earlier in the Games.

Both women know they need to improve if they hope to reach the podium again.

"It's not the best performance I had but I got through it and reached the semifinal at my first Olympics," Benfeito told reporters in London.

Filion said she felt good starting the day.

"Today I didn't dive as I hoped to,'' she said. "But I am excited to go to the semifinal."

China has won five of six diving golds so far in London, including the women's 10-metre synchronized title claimed by Chen and Wang Hao. The country's attempt to sweep all eight golds was spoiled when Ilya Zakharov of Russia won the men's three-metre springboard on Tuesday.
