Gawker names Deadspin’s A.J. Daulerio new editor-in-chief

Big news in the New York media world: Gawker Media founder Nick Denton announced on Monday that A.J. Daulerio, longtime editor of Gawker-owned sports blog Deadspin, will become editor-in-chief of the flagship Gawker.com.

Daulerio--responsible for some of Deadspin's most trafficked scoops, most notably the publication of Brett Favre's lewd cellphone photos--will replace current editor Remy Stern, who is stepping down. Tommy Craggs, Daulerio's deputy at Deadspin, will replace him at the sports site. The moves are effective Jan. 1, Denton wrote in a memo to staffers.

Stern became editor of Gawker in February 2010, after Denton acquired Stern's CityFile.com.

"It's not as if Gawker is in crisis," Denton wrote. "[But] we need to release the full potential of the site's excellent roster of writers—and fill out the team with new hires. A.J. has proven himself as both developer and recruiter of editorial talent. That's what the site needs right now. Hence the switch."
