Those Scots are tough: Flickr photo of the day
Hardy, rugged, thrawn, taciturn: words used to describe the kilted Scotsman of a bygone era. But look at where he came from; look at the weather he suffered and … the long winter nights he spent snuggled beneath the quilts with his fiery lass. Aye, he suffered, he did, but in the best ways.
Thus it was for the men of Clan Mackenzie, who founded Eilean Donan Castle in the 13th century. Located on the northwest coast of Scotland, the castle was destroyed by British ships during the first Jacobite uprising of 1719.
In 1919, Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap, whose ancestors were allies of the Mackenzies, bought the little island of Eilean Donan and took it upon himself to rebuild what is now one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks.
