Beading, Balmain, and a Kristen Stewart-Kim Kardashian Fashion Faceoff

Fashion is all about taking risks, and both Kristen Stewart and Kim Kardashian are no strangers to style that pushes boundaries.

When the two ladies reached for similar Balmain dresses with ornate embellishments more than two years apart, we were reminded that while they certainly have different tastes, they share a similar pension for intriguing choices. The French design house, known for its opulent, daring, and chic looks, was the perfect atelier for the women to strut their stuff since they both intended to grab attention for very different reasons.

The future Mrs. Kanye West, 33, stepped out on Sunday in a midnight blue, modest version of the dress, and strolled through a paparazzi-filled Paris street with her main squeeze as they nailed down details for their upcoming nuptials in the city. K.Stew, 24, wore a forest green, strapless, midriff-baring style to the "Snow White and the Huntsman" premiere in 2012, and she discreetly may have been vying for the attention of the film's married director, Rupert Sanders.

Let's take a closer look at the finer details of their ensembles.

What they wore: A pearl-encrusted, embellished dress from the Balmain Fall 2012 collection.

How they styled it: Kristen started her overall look with a messy up-do, which she teamed with dramatic smoky eyes and a pale pink lip. The habitually dressed-down star forwent flashy jewels, which let her porcelain skin and sensual makeup take center stage. Kim, on the other hand, who typically reaches for dark, dramatic makeup, chose neutral tones to match her dress. She wore her hair down, but it fell unusually flat and looked as if she hadn't combed it in days. Her dull strands paired with the high neckline of the dress disappointed.

Kim's curves filled out the bodice of the dress and drew our attention to the stunning detailing on the frock, which stretched across every inch of fabric. The Fabergé egg-like elements looked completely different on Kristen and accentuated her tiny waist. She opted for a two-piece version of the dress, which elongated her petite frame and showed a hint of her midriff.

To keep warm, Kim wore tights underneath the dress and paired it with a set of black, open-toe, lace-up booties. Like any fairytale princess, Kristen wore a pair of sparkly, crystal-encrusted Louboutins.

Judges scorecard: Kristen Stewart, aka Snow White, was easily the fairest of them all in this kingdom. The way she styled the garment — with glam but rosy makeup, and sexy, twinkling shoes — was perfect for the nighttime event. The dress, even with a modest neckline, is better suited for dressier occasions, and Kim looked as though she'd forgotten to change into daytime clothes. This point is especially apparent when you see Kanye West walking by her side in a casual sweatshirt and jeans.
