Meet JJ, a life saving service dog to a seven year old girl in North Carolina named Kaelyn who suffers from a disorder called Mastocytosis. This rare disease causes extreme reactions to everyday changes in her environment like stress, fatigue and changes in temperature.
Sometimes those reactions can be violent and require help, and with training, JJ has learned to detect an oncoming reaction in time alert her parents and get help. The dog was trained using swabs that the family collected during their daughter’s reactions, much like an insulin dog, and now she’s a life saver for this young girl.
Two years ago her parents worried about every minute of her life, but JJ, a little terrier rescue dog, showed a special talent in detecting the chemical changes in Kaelyn’s body before her reactions become severe. Now JJ goes everywhere with KK to school, to bed, and even, in a medical first, to the hospital operating room, where anesthesiologists say JJ's nose is a finer instrument to keep KK safe than any medical device.
