Albert Einstein Memorial Statue Is Yarn-Bombed

A large bronze statue of scientist Albert Einstein on Thursday was mysteriously covered entirely in colorful yarn.

Well, it's not such a mystery. The artist Olek, whose work consists primarily of crochet and sculpture, took responsibility for the work, tweeting a photo of the "yarn storming in DC" at 6:05 a.m. Thursday.

The statue, located on the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences, was wrapped in bright pink and purple crocheted yarn. The figure, which appears to be seated, is 12 feet in height.

"Wow, this is Awesome! You're like the Banksy of yarn," one viewer tweeted in response to the image.

But apparently, not everyone had the same level of appreciation for the Brooklyn-based artist's work.

According to the blog DCist, the Einstein memorial was divested of its covering after just a few hours.

"Oh no! I am so sad about someone unwrapping it," Olek told DCist in an email.
