Rashida Jones Urges John Travolta to 'Come Out'

In a recent interview for her latest film, actress Rashida Jones said it was high time for a movie star to come out of the closet and she urged John Travolta to "come out."

The 36-year-old "Parks and Recreation" star, who is the youngest daughter of music producer Quincy Jones, made the shock pronouncement during an interview last Friday with the Bay Area website Spinning Platters.

When her co-star and co-writer of the film "Celeste and Jesse Forever," Will McCormack, said in the interview, "There needs to be, like, a professional athlete that comes out," Jones chimed in, "And a movie star!"

"Like John Travolta?" Jones added. "Come out! Come on. How many masseurs have to come forward? Let's do this."

Reps for Travolta and Jones did not respond immediately to ABCNews.com's request for comment. However, Jones issued an apology to Travolta today via Twitter.

"Made a thoughtless comment about John Travolta. I sincerely apologize. Nobody's personal life is my business," she wrote on her Twitter account.

Travolta was sued earlier this year by two male massage therapists who claimed the actor tried to have sex with them during massage sessions.

Travolta's publicist called the suits "complete fiction and fabrication" and the two masseurs later dropped their complaints.

Jones made the remarks while proclaiming her admiration for rapper Frank Ocean, who recently revealed that his first love was a man. "It was a bold thing to say, but it was coming from a good place," Spinning Platters writer Jason LeRoy told ABCNews.com about Jones' Travolta comments. "It was within the context of a conversation about how empowering it was when Frank Ocean came out." "It's fantastic that he did what he did," Jones said about Ocean in the interview. "He's in such close proximity to all these rappers so he's battling homophobia just by being honest." "But big stars need to come out," she continued. "Ricky Martin was huge. That was big; I was really happy about that."

"People are so precious about their careers," Jones said, before joking, "I'm gay."

Jones and McCormack once dated before deciding they were better as friends. In their new film, "Celeste and Jesse Forever," Jones and "SNL" star Andy Samberg play a couple attempting to navigate a divorce while remaining friends. The film screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
