Canines Cool Off With Doggie Gelato
Are the temperatures too hot for your four-legged friend? If a cold beer doesn't seem like quite the thing to cool him down, he can now enjoy Italy's finest ice cream - thanks to the new wave of frozen canine treats hitting the market.
IceBau, a new gelato for dogs, has been getting great reviews from both dogs and owners. Created by a teacher in 2005, the gluten-free gelato is made with lactose-free milk, sweetened with fructose and enhanced with chicory root. One serving contains 140 calories for a 3.5 ounce portion. The gelato will be featured at Florence's upcoming Gelato Festival.
A local pet supply shop in Rome sells IceBau vanilla, rice and yogurt flavors for 2 euros ($2.50.)
If your pet is hoping to get his paws on some in this country, M Bella Gelato in Austin, Texas, serves its own doggy gelato in peanut butter, chicken and beef flavors.
East Coast dogs can enjoy a frozen treat at Shake Shack, where a lick of the Pooch-ini sundae includes vanilla custard, biscuits and peanut butter sauce. The Pooch-ini contains sugar, dairy and nut products and is not recommended for smaller dogs.
