Blake Shelton Confirms Gwen Stefani Was a Rebound ... At First

I mean, we weren't going to be the ones to say it, but ... when they first got together, it was hard not to think of Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani's relationship as a rebound.

If you hadn't been keeping up, you'd never guess that they'd had anything less than a fairytale romance—remember when they looked positively regal after the 2016 Oscars? But as the sound of wedding bells seems to creep closer and closer, it was about time for Shelton to bring everyone back down to Earth with a stunning admission about how this power couple actually formed in the first place.

On this week's Sunday Today with Willie Geist, Shelton got candid about what it was like to date Stefani at first, and it did justice to the term "brutally honest."

"When I was going through my divorce and just hit rock bottom ... it was a miracle that I met somebody that was going through the same exact thing that I was at the exact same moment in time," he began.

In case you missed it, the two Voice coaches first coupled up in 2015 after each going through (very) public divorces—Stefani from Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale and Shelton from country singer Miranda Lambert. If that timing has you saying "rebound," well ... you're kind of right.

“I think in the back of our minds we both kind of thought this is a rebound deal because we were both coming out of a pretty low spot in our lives and we’re kind of clinging to each other to get through this. But now here we are, going on three years later and every day that goes by just feels like a stronger bond between the two of us. It constantly feels like it’s going to the next level.”

You can't accuse the guy of not being honest. All that said, this isn't the first time Shelton's let his tongue slip about the casual nature of his relationship beginnings, like he did back in September while on stage smack dab in front of Stefani's three kids.

"[We] started hanging out together and messing around," he said before a pointed look from Gwen had him changing his tune as he quickly added "you know, texting each other."

All that texting sure worked out for them, didn't it?
