Black student union holds Black History Month Celebration

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Friday, Feb. 23, the Black Student Union at Pikes Peak State College (PPSC) will sponsor a Black History Month Celebration for students and the community. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Grove and Learning Commons of PPSC’s Centennial Campus.

Black History Month was established in 1976 by Carter G. Woodson, to recognize the significant impact Black Americans have had on American culture and history.

“The Black History Month Celebration is part of a series of events sponsored by the Black Student Union to educate and celebrate on the significant, but often overlooked, impact Black Americans have made on our nation,” says Enrique Romo, Vice President of Student Experience and Equity.

President of the BSU, Maya Harvin says, “The Black Student Union aims to create a welcoming environment and safe place for African American students at PPSC. We are putting on this celebration because we want Black residents of Colorado Springs to also feel that they are safe and appreciated in this community.”

The celebration will include food trucks, educational workshops, trivia about black history and heritage, a scavenger hunt, and performance arts by Black artists.

The following week, the PPSC’s Black Student Union will hold a Black Renaissance Open Mic event on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This open mic will be for Black artists to showcase poetry, song, and rap, and will mark the end of a month’s celebration of Black history.

The open mic event will be held at the theater at PPSC’s Centennial Campus, located at 5675 South Academy Boulevard.
