Black bear shot by Kingston resident for attacking his animal

A black bear was injured Friday night after being shot by a Kingston man for attacking his livestock.

According to police, a resident found the bear attacking his goat on Hawthorn Street around 3 p.m.

When the resident attempted to scare the bear away, ‘the bear postured up towards him.’ The man then shot the bear with his lawfully owned firearm because he was in fear of being attacked, police say.

Officers saw the bear had a minor injury to one of its rear legs before he fled into the woods.

Police say they have been unable to locate the bear’s whereabouts as of Friday night.

Massachusetts Environmental Police and MassWildlife will monitor the area over the next several days to make sure the bear continues to be able to care for itself.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
