Birdie the golden retriever apologizes for pulling fire alarm at Grimes doggie day care
Birdie arrived at doggie day care at Dogwoods Lodge in Grimes on Friday with a little extra pep in her step — so much so that she accidentally jumped up and pulled the fire alarm.
When firefighters from the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department arrived on scene, it wasn't exactly clear who set off the alarm. But Dogwoods Lodge owner Jessica Tapper said security camera footage revealed the culprit to be Birdie.
The nearly three-year-old golden retriever loves belly rubs and has a reputation for being a little "nuts," Tapper said. She said the daycare separates dogs into a "lazy room" and a "crazy room" — and Birdie is always in the crazy room.
"She plays nonstop," Tapper told the Des Moines Register.
Tapper and firefighters couldn't help but forgive sweet Birdie, who just wanted to play with all her friends at daycare.
"Just a false alarm, it happens sometimes," said Johnston-Grimes firefighter Nick Pearson. Plus, he joked, "we are happy to go there and see dogs once in a while, so its OK."

But poor Birdie still had to say sorry for causing a raucous at daycare on Friday.
In a picture posted to the daycare's Instagram, Birdie's big brown eyes reveal remorse as she wears a naughty sign apologizing to members of the Grimes Fire Department.
"I'm sorry I pulled the fire alarm today. Sincerely, Birdie," the sign reads.
Tapper assured the Register that Birdie is still welcome at daycare, and that the business is already taking steps to prevent another false fire alarm in the future.
"Needless to say we are getting covers now. We already have some ordered," Tapper said.
