Bird collides with Alaska Airlines plane that landed at SFO

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — An Alaska Airlines aircraft collided with a bird midflight on Thursday, the airline confirmed to KRON4. Flight 224, going from Boston to San Francisco (SFO), was discovered to be hit by a bird or a flock of birds.

The flight landed at SFO around noon. No emergency was declared before the arrival of Flight 224, Alaska Airlines said. The bird strike impacted the flight.

A photo sent to KRON4 shows a dent on the aircraft (below). The dent comes after the bird strike on the aircraft midflight.

The aircraft was removed from normal operations for inspection. According to Alaska Airlines’ website, Flight 224 arrived at SFO at 12:02 p.m. — 30 minutes earlier than its scheduled arrival.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 63% of bird strikes happen during the day. Between 1990 and 2019, there were 227,005 wildlife strikes with a civil aircraft in the U.S. The FAA says 97% of these wildlife strikes involve birds.
