Bills filed in Louisiana Legislature would make more data a public record and easier to get

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Louisiana State Representative filed bills to make public records more accessible.

State Rep. Dixon McMakin (R-La.) filed HB116 and HB113. HB116 would make some personal information of a public employee accessible and remove privacy. HB113 states that Louisiana universities are not allowed to charge student-operated media organizations for public information from the university.

These legislations come after McMakin filed a lawsuit against the Board of Supervisors at LSU in 2021 for not being granted access to public records against a former LSU employee who was accused of misconduct.

In 2023, an LSU student and a member of the LSU newspaper, The Reveille, requested public information about the same former employee. After being denied, the student filed a lawsuit against the university.
