Bill Snyder to share name with new wheat variety

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Farmers across the Kansas will soon be able to get their hands on a new crop named after the legendary Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder.

Snyder stepped back from K-State’s football program in December 2018 after 27 years of leadership. His long career gave fans a lot to celebrate and be thankful for.

Now, the Kansas Wheat Commission is getting ready to immortalize Snyder’s legacy with the state’s farming community. On Thursday, March 14 the commission plans to reveal a new variety of wheat in Manhattan named after the famous K-State football coach.

Vice President of Communications for the Kansas Wheat Commission Marsha Boswell told 27 News the event will showcase the new variety of wheat which will share a name with Snyder. The wheat, while not available for purchase yet, is being bred to have increased resistance to various viruses which target wheat and has better chances of resisting the effects of drought.
