Bill would rename part of M-6 in honor of tow truck driver

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A recently-introduced bill would rename a section of M-6 in honor of a tow truck driver who was hit by a vehicle and killed last year.

House Bill 5552 would designate a section of M-6 in Kent County, starting at Kalamazoo Avenue and continuing east to 60th Street, as the “Keagan Spencer Memorial Highway.” The bill was introduced Wednesday in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Spencer, 25, was a tow truck driver from Hastings.

The deadly crash happened Nov. 4 on M-6 near Kraft Avenue. Troopers say Spencer stopped his tow truck and got out, apparently to help a dog in the median. Then, an eastbound vehicle lost control and went into the median, hitting Spencer.

Spencer’s family members and loved ones previously told News 8 he was a great friend and could always be counted on.

“It didn’t matter what you needed, what the circumstances were, what the situation was,” said Blake Garver, a close friend, in November. “If you called him, he answered. He would drop anything to help anybody.”

Spencer’s father urged drivers to slow down.

“Imagine your desk chair put on the white line on the highway, and you’ve got to have cars that are buzzing by you at 60, 70, 80 mph. It’s really scary,” Matthew Spencer said. “This towing community really deserves a little bit of respect from the motoring public, to just slow down. Help us out there.”

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure.
