Bill and Hillary Clinton Buy House Next Door, Create Chappaqua Compound

BUYERS: Bill and Hillary Clinton
LOCATION: Chappaqua, NY
PRICE: $1,160,000
SIZE: 3,631 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Amid a long, brutal and, according to the latest polls, increasingly tight presidential campaign, former president Bill Clinton and Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton found time to shell out $1.16 million for the property next door to their long-time residence on Old House Lane in Chappaqua, New York. Listing details show the 1.51-acre property anchored by an updated single-level ranch style house of 3,631 square feet built in the late 1970s and configured with four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. There are glossy pecan wood floors throughout, according to listing details, a combination living/dining room and a “modern chef’s kitchen” that’s open over a large center island to an informal dining space with fireplace that, in turn, flows through to a family room with built in cabinetry. The property has stacked stone walls, both flat and rolling lawns ringed by mature trees, a children’s play structure, and a swimming pool.

It could be the Clintons purchased the property to house staffers or their secret service security detail, both of which will likely be beefed up if she wins the White House in November. However, an unidentified source told the New York Post, who first broke news of the Clinton’s acquisition, that one of the rumors circulating on the political real estate street they “’plan to use this as a mother/daughter house for [their daughter] Chelsea and her kids to visit on the weekends when they want to escape the city and their Flatiron digs….’”

Much to the chagrin of their many and vociferous detractors, the Clintons have become rich since they moved out of the White House in January 2001. And indeed they have. Their tax filings show they hauled in somewhere around $139 million between 2007 and 2014 and their recently released returns for 2015 show they paid around $3.6 million in taxes on about $10.6 million of income. That’s a lot of dough by any but a billionaire’s standard. However, despite their high earnings the Clintons maintain a residential property portfolio that is arguably modest for people with their financial resources. According to property records, in late 1999 they paid $1.7 million for a lovely and nicely appointed but hardly lavish 1.1-acre property at the tail end of a sleepy Chappaqua cul-de-sac. The spacious but far from huge 5,232-square foot, gambrel-roofed main residence dates to the late 1800s and the property additionally includes a manned guard house at the front gate, a large motor court at the end of a long drive, a detached barn-like garage with additional living space likely used to house staff and/or security, expansive lawns ringed mature foliage, and a swimming pool. In addition to their newly formed compound in Chappaqua, the only other private home the political powerhouse couple is known to own is a pretty and dignified 6,478-square-foot red brick Colonial on a leafy cul-de-sac in Washington, D.C. acquired up in early 2001 for $2.85 million.
