Bill Haas withdraws from Genesis Open after being injured in a deadly car crash
PGA Tour veteran Bill Haas has withdrawn from this coming weekend’s Genesis Open after being injured in a rollover car crash that killed one man on Tuesday night, according to multiple reports.
Haas was the passenger in a Ferrari being driven by 71-year-old family friend Mark Gibello a few miles from Riviera Country Club, the site of the upcoming PGA Tour event in Pacific Palisades, Calif., where they reportedly collided with a BMW around 6:30 p.m. Gibello was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KTLA-TV. Haas and the 50-year-old woman driving the BMW were rushed to the hospital.
A third car driven by actor Luke Wilson was “clipped” by the Ferrari, authorities said.
Haas is “doing OK,” Los Angeles Police Department Police Detective Jeff Fischer told KTLA. The six-time PGA Tour winner’s father, Jay, told the Golf Channel on Wednesday that his son is expected to make a full recovery. He reportedly suffered no broken bones and is experiencing pain and swelling in his leg.
“Last night in Pacific Palisades, California, Bill Haas was involved in a serious car accident in which the driver — a member of the family with whom Haas and his family were staying for the Genesis Open — was killed,” Haas’ agent, Allen Hobbs, said in a statement, via ESPN.com. “While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and — more importantly — his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time.”
Haas plans to return to his hometown of Greenville, S.C., for recovery, his agent said.
