Bill Clinton Tells the Story of His Meet-Cute with Hillary Clinton at the DNC

From Cosmopolitan

Former president Bill Clinton took the Democratic National Convention stage Tuesday night, giving a speech in support of his wife, Hillary, that was far more focused on the personal than the political. In his speech, he recounted how he first met his future wife and the adorable ways he tried to win her over.

"In the spring of 1971, I met a girl," he began.

From there, the former president talked about how he'd been too nervous to approach her at first, until Hillary eventually approached him and confronted him for staring at her so much. Their love blossomed from there, and they've "been walking, and talking, and laughing together ever since."

Bill went on to talk about how in awe of his wife he is for her dedication to public service and how she's always refused to settle, even when it came to marrying him. In fact, it was only on the third time that Bill proposed to his future wife that she said yes, and even that was only after he'd purchased her dream house on a whim.

"I married my best friend," he said. "I was still in awe, after more than four years of being around her, at how smart, and strong, and caring she was."

The former president also recounted their birth of their daughter, Chelsea, and how Hillary began to balance the roles of mother and public servant, even if she didn't receive credit for a lot of the work she did. He discussed how unrelenting Hillary has always been, and how she has always pursued justice and equality for those less fortunate than her.

"Hillary will make us stronger together," he ended. "You know it, because she's spent a lot of time doing it ... Those of us who have more yesterdays than tomorrows tend to care more about our children and grandchildren. The reason you should elect her, is that in the greatest country on earth, we have always been about tomorrow."

Many people applauded Bill Clinton's speech at the DNC and pointed out the fact that it sounded eerily similar to the speeches we've heard from so many nominees' wives in the past. The focus was 100 percent on Hillary Clinton, and while a majority of the speech was extremely personal, it was also an in-depth explanation of just how qualified she is to be the next president from the perspective of someone who's already had the job.
