Bikes placed on capitol steps serve as reminders ‘we all need to do better’ watching the road

(WHTM)– Bicycles on the steps of the state capitol on Wednesday remind us to pay more attention to the road.

The bikes represent lives lost from crashes involving bicyclists. This year, there are 27 white bikes, called “ghost bikes,” and there are one for each bicyclist killed in Pennsylvania last year. The one “red bike” represents the hundreds of bicyclists injured.

“It’s very sad. I sat with a family last year, it was really really sad talking to them about how they lost their daughter down on Cameron Street,” said bicyclist Louis Searles.

The sight of the bikes can be moving, even for those just passing by.

“Walking down these steps and seeing this. Really touched me because that meant there is somebody out there advocating,” said Courtney Thompkins from Pittsburgh.

Dozens of bicyclists, rode in silence from Green Street in Harrisburg to the Capitol to raise awareness for those who have been killed or injured while riding a bike.

Organizers say everyone on the road needs to be more careful.

“That we have just as munch right on the road as a car,” Diane Riley of Harrisburg Bicycle Club said. “And they need to respect us and we need to be safe.”

“We all need to do better, we the bicyclist need to obey the rules, we suffer when we don’t obey the rules, people yell at us like, ‘they’re not stopping, I’m not stopping,’ aw, but if you don’t stop in a car it’s catastrophic,” Ross Willard of Recycle Bicycle said.
