Bike and pedestrian path planned for downtown Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A two-mile bike and pedestrian path through the heart of Downtown is in the works.

The City of Columbus, Edwards Companies and the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation recently announced plans for the path, dubbed the “Capital Line.”

The trail will extend from the Gay Street District, over the Broad Street Bridge to The Peninsula, to Belle Street, over the Rich Street Bridge, to Rich Street and along Fourth Street, connecting back with Gay Street. Multiple attractions such as COSI, the Ohio Statehouse, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum and the Scioto Mile riverfront will be located along the route.

The path, exclusive to pedestrians and bikers, was a community-generated suggestion from the 2022 Downtown Columbus Strategic Plan. The pathway will feature public art, street furniture and lights.

“I’m especially proud of how this is being done in direct response to resident feedback,” Mayor Andrew Ginther said. “The Capital Line will enhance equity and community pride, providing a safe way to walk or bike through our Downtown and an easily accessible connection to transit.”

Design is set to happen over the next year, with a design team being selected this spring, and the city will be collecting community input as part of the process. Construction will begin in 2025, according to the City of Columbus.
