Big temperature swings for the Beehive State this weekend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — An increasing southwest flow into the weekend will bring a quick bump in temperatures on Saturday.

We’re starting the day with sunshine along the southern half of the state and a few isolated showers over Northern Utah, mainly over the higher terrain. Moisture will clear out late in the morning and high pressure will start to build back in. Temperatures today will be a bit cooler than Thursday with highs mainly in the upper 50s for the Wasatch Front, southern Utah will mainly see 60s and 70s for highs with St. George climbing into the low 80s. Dry weather will carry over from Friday afternoon into Saturday with increasing southwest flow.

The forecast over the weekend will bring drastic changes from Saturday to Sunday. The high pressure that builds in today will quickly move from west to east, resulting in a strong southerly flow taking over Saturday. The strong southerly winds will push our temperatures well above average across the state. On Saturday we’ll see highs in the 60s and 70s for most across the state with a chance the Wasatch Front gets into the upper 70s. Meanwhile, St. George could see upper-80s. Skies will be mostly quiet outside of a slight chance for a few pop-ups in the high terrain. Along with the surge in temperatures, winds will pick up on Saturday as well and will be strongest along the western half of the state. Wind advisories are expected.

That southerly flow will precede a storm system that will arrive Sunday into Monday from the west. This storm will bring cooler air and scattered showers by Sunday with wet weather favoring the northern two-thirds of the state. Even with another cool down we’ll mainly see valley rain and mountain snow. With a northwesterly flow staying in place into next week, a couple of systems will move in which will help to keep temperatures below average for most while the chance of wet weather could stick around through the first half of next week. Northern Utah may end up seeing some healthy moisture on the magnitude of 0.5″-1.5″. Above 8,000 ft. we could see some healthy snow as well. Stay tuned!
