'Big shoes to fill:' Acting Wayne County auditor named following Underwood's retirement

Wayne County commissioners appointed Russell Robertson acting county auditor at a February meeting.

Robertson stepped into the role held by Jarra Underwood, who served as Wayne County Auditor for 25 years. Underwood's retirement was effective Feb. 29.

"Jarra definitely has left some very big shoes to fill. It's going to be difficult to fill this role, but I'm excited to step into it," Robertson said.

Commissioners also:

  • Approved a resolution from the Wayne County Engineer to apply for funding through the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study Grant Program that would provide $40,000 to cover the cost of a project that would extend the Heartland Walking Trail to the Ohio and Erie Towpath Project, which runs through Chippewa Township and Summit County.

  • Approved a resolution for an administrative agreement between the Wayne County commissioners and Community Action Wayne/Medina. The agreement allows Wayne County to accept funds from the Rural Revolving Land Program for economic development, with $200,000 being used to assist Community Action Wayne/Medina with the Wayne County Transit Program.

  • Award a contract to Cuyahoga Fence, 43475 Oberlin-Elyria Road, Oberlin, for a guardrail installation project on Apple Creek Road in Green Township, with a cost not to exceed $81,117.75.

  • Approved a resolution for county Administrator Patrick Herron to advertise bids to removing sidewalks on the east side of state Route 83 at Front Street in Burbank and replace them with new concrete sidewalks, stemming back to Burbank's application for federal grant money through the 2023 Community Development Block Grant program.

  • Approved a resolution for a Road Use Maintenance Agreement with the Ruhlin Company of Sharon Center to assist on a project with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for the improvement of Shreve Lake on Critchfield Road in Clinton Township.
