Big score: 35,000 pounds of pork donated to Utah Food Bank

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — In an effort to address food insecurity, Utah Pork Producers Association (UPPA) teamed up with Daily’s Premium Meats, as well as football players from Brigham Young University and Utah State University, to donate 35,000 pounds of bacon and other pork products to the Utah Food Bank.

“Food insecurity is a critical issue that affects many families in our community,” said Jim Webb, UPPA president. “Through this donation, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most. We are grateful for Daily’s Premium Meats’ support and the participation of local university athletes in this important cause.”

BYU player Jake Retzlaff was unloading trucks of donations and stocking shelves at the Utah Food Bank, saying it’s a way to give back to the community.

“There’s plenty of times where it seems like you do such a small thing and in reality, for the people you’re doing it for, it can be a big deal for them and make a huge difference in their life,” he said.

Ginette Bott, president & CEO of the Utah Food Bank, spoke to the significance of this donation.

“Here in Utah, there about 317,000 people who don’t know where their next meal will come from. Food insecurity is very difficult for many of our families and individuals,” she said. “…When we can get protein and get things that help to increase the benefit of a healthy diet, it’s very important to the recipients of the Utah Food Bank.”

Bott remarked that with the donation that came in today, March 21, UPPA has donated a total of 233,000 pounds of protein since 2019 to the Utah Food Bank.

“This donation brings more than just food to the table; it brings hope and nourishment to countless families across Utah,” Bott said.
