Big changes come to Midlands interstate overnight, will continue through end of the month

Drivers using Interstate 20 Wednesday night will have to find a detour, as crews will be out working on long-running improvements to one of the Midlands main thoroughfares.

The S.C. Department of Transportation has announced road closures on eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 near the exit onto Augusta Road/U.S. Highway 1, with full detours nightly from Wednesday night through Sunday morning. The detours will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday.

Because of work on the interchange, drivers headed east on I-20 will have to take Exit 58 onto Augusta Road, turn left and follow law enforcement directions to rejoin I-20 at the next ramp.

Drivers on Augusta Road heading from Lexington to West Columbia will have to go past the interstate to Dooley Road, turn right and use the roundabout to turn around back onto Augusta Road and then use the eastbound ramp from the other side. Drivers heading toward Lexington will continue to use the same ramp.

The DOT project is replacing the interchange at Augusta Road to improve traffic flow and is expected to be completed this spring.

In addition, one or more lanes will be closed overnight on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 between the North Lake Drive and U.S. 378 exits starting Tuesday night and continuing through the end of the month.
