Vice President Joe Biden admitted to a group of young progressives on Wednesday that the “change” promised in his and President Obama’s 2008 “Hope and Change” campaign “didn’t happen,” but urged the left-wing youngsters not to throw in the towel.

“Look folks, this is within our power to change,” he told the kids gathered for the annual convention of Generation Progress, the youth branch of the left-wing Center for American Progress think-tank.

“Everybody says because we tried in ’08 and it didn’t happen, it’s not possible,” Biden admitted soberly. “Wrong. We’ve gone through these periods before. We’ve gone through these periods.”

“Folks, this is totally within our power,” the vice president exhorted (not for the first time). “Change — change for the better — is absolutely possible, and I believe it’s close to inevitable if you’re the drivers of it.”

Obama supporters have been frustrated by the administration’s inability to make serious inroads with lawmakers on progressive issues like immigration reform and climate change — with some advocating that the White House issue executive orders designed to bypass a recalcitrant Congress.
