Bibb County students can get $1,500 and health care experience through new program

A new program will give Bibb County juniors and seniors an opportunity to receive hands-on training for health careers, Atrium Health announced Monday.

Atrium Health Navicent is now accepting applications for the Realizing and Encouraging Adolescents to pursue Careers in Health program, which is a four-week session that averages 32 hours per week and provides students with an outlet to explore health care jobs, the organization said.

Students will shadow professionals in several interest areas: nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, radiology, health care administration, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and general physician work, Atrium Health said.

“It’s incredibly important that we inspire the health care workers of the future, fuel their interest and aid in creating a workforce pipeline that will shape our region’s health care for decades to come,” said Gina Keadle, chief human resource officer for Atrium Health’s Georgia region.

Students can look forward to daily professional engagement and development activities such as medical skills simulations, panel discussions with health care professionals, financial fitness, educational field trips and more.

They can also learn about higher education options in health care, as well as future employment opportunities at Atrium Health Navicent, the organization said.

“We encourage students to apply and get a taste of how rewarding a career in health care can be, and to find out more about education and career opportunities,” Keadle said.

Upon program completion, students will receive a $1,500 stipend and an invitation to attend the program graduation ceremony, the organization said.

The program is scheduled to start June 24 and last through July 19. Applications opened Monday and will remain open through April 22.

The student application process includes survey questions and a teacher of school administrator recommendation, the department added.

To be eligible for the program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 16 years old at the start of the program

  • Have a minimum, unweighted 2.5 GPA

  • Have an interest in pursuing a career in health care

  • Have a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor

  • Complete and submit all required application materials by the application deadline

  • If selected, must be able to participate and complete the program.
