BHS choir reaches State Finals Sweet Sixteen

May 2—BATESVILLE — For the first time in history, the Batesville High School Choir has reached the Indiana State School Music Association's state concert finals.

"This is an incredible achievement," BCSC Choir Director Dan Borns said. "I am really proud of how the students have performed all year, and this is a great way to cap off all of their hard work."

He pointed out that there are 682 high schools in Indiana; to qualify to be in the Top 16 Choir in the state is a huge accomplishment, as this is open to all schools regardless of size.

Batesville is in good company as many of the other schools participating are well-known for their historically strong performing arts programs. This includes Avon, Fishers, Plainfield, Carmel, and Lafayette Jefferson.

The mixed choir finals will be held Saturday, May 4, at the Pike Performing Arts Center in Indianapolis with the Batesville choir performing at 7:50 p.m. The public is invited to attend and admission is $7.

The state champion will each be awarded a $1,000 "Winners Drink Milk" scholarship for one of its students, courtesy of American Dairy Association Indiana and Prairie Farms Dairy.

Some special festivities are being planned for the students on Friday and Saturday.

If community members or local businesses would like to help congratulate the 36 member choir, you can contribute by donating items for individual gift bags for the choir member. Drop off your items for their gift bags at the BHS Office to the attention of Missy Merkel.

The public is also invited to meet in front of the high school at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, May 4, with banners, posters, and plenty of school spirit to cheer on the students as they leave for state finals.
