Beyond Paradise's Sally Bretton responds to possible Archie return

Beyond Paradise star Sally Bretton has responded to the possibility that Archie could return in season 2.

Much of the Death in Paradise spin-off's first season was dominated by the love triangle between Humphrey (Kris Marshall), his fiancée Martha (Sally), and her former flame Archie (Jamie Bamber).

Things start in a good place for Humphrey and Martha in the second season, though during an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, the actress was asked whether Archie will be back on the scene this time around.

"Um… no [laughs]," Sally responded. "Archie is safely packed away for the time being, I would say. I think that Martha made it pretty clear.

"I don’t know. I mean, he’s a confident character, so I wouldn’t put it past him ever rearing his head again. But he’s been put back in his box for this series, anyway."

During the chat, Kris spoke about the challenges for the couple this season and what the future looks like for them.

"One of the wonderful things about Humphrey and Martha is that, actually, when they’re not being existentially challenged in terms of their relationship and their existence as a couple, they’re a lot of fun together, you know?" he noted.

"And they sort of dovetail beautifully together, in that they don’t really expect or have too many expectations of each other, aside from the fact that they just seem to work together.

"They’re both quite unorthodox people, and obviously Martha puts up with a great deal of idiosyncrasies from Humphrey’s side of things."

The star continued: "No one can change their mind like Martha can [laughs]. But, you know, Humphrey goes with it because he loves her, and she loves him. I think that’s one of their great strengths as a couple, and is one of the great things about them.

"In series two, we sort of see them much more as a united front. They’re witty and funny, and, although I loathe the word, they’re kind of cute together.

"I think we see more of the fun side of them. And, as a united front, they’re quite powerful together, and they can do great things, and provide a loving environment, and extend that love outwards. I think that’s kind of where we find them."

Beyond Paradise will return on BBC One on Friday, March 22.
