Beyond Paradise star Barbara Flynn has teased a different side to her character Anne Lloyd in season two.

Anne’s husband passed away shortly before the events of the Death in Paradise spin-off series, which led daughter Martha to move down to Shipton Abbott with Humphrey.

Now in the BBC show's second series, which begins next Friday (March 22), Anne decides to throw herself into the world of online dating in a bid to find love again.

In an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, Flynn explained the emotions associated with her character’s new storyline.

She said: "It was a natural progression, I suppose, but also quite a difficult one to jump in. But she does jump in with encouragement and a bit of determination and finds it’s quite fun – but also a bit dangerous. She does get support from the youth around her, from a lovely new character, and it’s a journey.

"It would have been a great shock, I think, to do that; to push yourself out there. Because of course after being with someone for so long, you’ve got your shorthand and your life together, and then you’re going to look for someone else. But it’s also exciting and funny. And getting to know where to swipe and what to do – all that stuff, we make the most of all that."

Flynn has teased that viewers will see a more vulnerable side of Anne in the new series, beneath her confident exterior.

"She does present quite a brave, social front," she continued, "and she seems quite sure of herself. But there’s nothing like losing a husband of many years to kind of take the rug from under your feet. She’s building herself up, but trying probably to hide a bit.

"But also opening other doors to make herself more vulnerable, you know, and to allow the vulnerability in and her daughter, of course, is incredibly sensitive."

But Anne’s new dating storyline will also be a lot of fun to watch, just as it was fun for Flynn to film.

She explained: "Almost every situation you could possibly imagine sort of does occur and it was lovely to have different scenes with different glorious men who I’ve met in my career before. It was great fun. It’s a lovely storyline, and I was thrilled with it."

Beyond Paradise will return on BBC One on Friday, March 22 at 8pm.
