Beyoncé is reportedly 'mulling an investment' into the Houston Rockets

When the Houston Rockets surprisingly went up for sale in mid-July, millionaires were expected to line up for the chance to pool money and meet what should be a multi-billion-dollar asking price, and one extremely famous entertainment mogul reportedly could be the first to sit at the negotiating table.

Houston native Beyoncé “is mulling an investment” in the Rockets, according to Bloomberg News.

The 22-time Grammy Award-winner’s husband, rapper Jay-Z, once owned less than 1 percent of the Brooklyn Nets, before he sold his stake due to a conflict of interest with his Roc Nation Sports agency, which represents a number of NBA players, including reigning Finals MVP Kevin Durant. How the NBA would feel about that same conflict if Jay-Z’s wife joined a bid for the Rockets remains to be seen.

Beyoncé is regularly spotted on NBA sidelines with her husband, including front row at both the All-Star Game and a playoff contest between the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers this past season.

If she were successful in coalescing an ownership group with enough money to buy a Rockets team that could sell in excess of $2 billion, Beyoncé would join fellow musicians Usher, Nelly and Justin Timberlake as part-owners in the NBA. Nelly joined the Charlotte Hornets ownership group when they were still the Bobcats in 2004, Usher got in on the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005 and Memphis native Timberlake bought into the Grizzlies in 2012. All three have seen a hefty return on their investment.

For posterity’s sake, we should also note that Beyoncé has collaborated with Usher on “Love in This Club Part II” and Timberlake on “Until the End of Time,” while fellow Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland appeared on Nelly’s “Dilemma,” so she has extensive experience working with NBA owners.

Here’s a conspiracy for you: Former president Barack Obama has “discussed” joining an NBA ownership group, telling GQ Magazine he would “absolutely” be interested in the opportunity. More recently, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported “multiple people” are competing to include Obama in an ownership group, leading to widespread speculation that he could join a bid for the Rockets.

Beyoncé, of course, has performed for Obama. Obama and James Harden once hooped together. Beyoncé and Chris Paul became co-investors of a startup sports drink company just last year. They are all basically best friends. So, yeah, they’re going to buy the Rockets to help Harden put a ring on it.
