We already know that Queen Bey can pull off any and every look. But this past week, Beyoncé rocked her natural hair, and it’s so empowering. On Wednesday, December 6th, Beyoncé presented Colin Kaepernick with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. Kaepernick knew he would be receiving the award, but he didn’t know that Bey would be the one presenting it to him. Her appearance was a total surprise!

“Thank you, Colin Kaepernick,” Beyoncé said on stage at the ceremony, People reports. “Thank you for your selfless heart, and your conviction. Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion only hope to change the world for the better. To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color.”

In addition to her inspiring words, the singer also looked incredible. While donning a sparkly-yet-sporty dress for the occasion, Queen B was also wearing her natural hair. Beyoncé’s hair always looks gorgeous. But it was impactful for her to wear her hair natural when she presented Kaepernick with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.

Beyoncé’s hairstylist, Neal Farinah, was extremely proud to show off the look on Instagram.

“SLAY ME THAT NATURAL CURLY HAIR,” he captioned one pic.

Beyoncé’s words about Kaepernick’s activism, paired with both of them wearing natural hair, is a powerful statement. It’s hard not to be distracted by Beyoncé’s beauty, but her words — and Kaepernick’s words — deserve to be heard. The fight for racial equality and pro-Blackness is eternal. It is also extremely necessary, especially in our current political climate.

While it may seem subtle, Beyoncé’s natural hair makes an important statement.

And it also means a lot to a lot of people.

Sure, hair isn’t everything. But for a famous Black woman to wear her hair natural and proud, while presenting an award to someone who has made major waves fighting for Black lives? That’s something. In fact, that’s everything. Thank you, Beyoncé. For your beauty, your hair, and everything you stand for.
