Bethenny Frankel has recently lost some weight, but not as the result of a trendy Hollywood diet or fitness fad - The Real Housewives of New York City star claims the death of her boyfriend, Dennis Shields, is responsible for her weight loss.

Over the weekend Frankel, 47, posted a beautiful photo of herself smiling and clutching onto a Lucite replica of Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture with the caption “All you need is love.” A fan noticed the star looked thinner in her ruffled, floral ensemble and asked her about her secret.

“Love the dress. I would look heavier if I wore that. You’re looking extra thin in these photos,” wrote the user. “How/are you losing weight?”

“Death will do that to a person #griefdiet I don’t recommend it,” responded Frankel, who lost Shields in August as the result of a suspected overdose.

Frankel's grief-related weight loss is not uncommon. According to a 1998 study, your physical as well as mental health can suffer as a result of a major loss - and weight loss is definitely a component. Researchers claim that many people become so distressed during the initial stages of grief, that their hunger is impacted and they may even forget to eat.

However, as time passes, “the appetite for food is often the first appetite to return,” they write. By the third or forth month of bereavement, the weight the individual lost will usually have returned - and by month six many people have actually put on too much weight.

In case you are curious about Frankel’s approach to diet, it is pretty low frills and down-to-earth. She previously told Prevention that she thinks the whole idea of health gurus is “bullshit,” isn’t really into kale, and is anti-Atkins diet. She does promote getting “really solid, good quality” sleep, yoga and outdoor exercise such as walking on a beach, snowboarding and “nightclub dancing.”

Considering Frankel is aware that her recent weight loss is due to grief and is openly admitting it to the entire world, it is very likely that she is actively working through her emotions in a healthy manner and she will be back to her old BMI in no time.
