May 13—Berks County Prison employees were celebrated during National Correctional Officers and Employees Week.

The week was meant as an opportunity to honor and praise those who work in corrections. The tradition goes back to 1984 when President Ronald Regan set aside the first full week of May to celebrate.

Warden Jeffrey Smith said his administrative team spent time honoring staff at various meetings by organizing raffle giveaways and enjoying special treats donated by community businesses throughout the week. He said it was a just small token of appreciation from the administration to recognize the commitment, dedication and courage they demonstrate on a daily basis in serving the community.

He said they also recognized several staff members who demonstrated leadership, teamwork, integrity, respect for others and a positive attitude while performing at a consistent exceptional level.

"Our line of work is not often recognized by the public," he said. "This profession is often thankless and most people do not understand what we do, how we do it, or even why we do it. My staff should be proud of themselves because what they do is important."

The following were recognized for their exemplary service:

—Sgt. Dakota Deaven received the Supervisor of the Year Award.

—Classification Specialist Nathan Repko received the Treatment Employee of the Year Award.

—Correctional Officers Robert Witt and Mitchell Landis received the Support Employee of the Year Award.

—Correctional Officer Amy Kline received the Custody Employee of the Year Award.
